The Arboretum Story

Hoping to help others with similar dreams and ambitions, Fran Bickelhaupt (with her husband, Bob) describe in A PRIVATE COUPLE CREATES A PUBLIC GARDEN how they founded and have maintained for almost thirty years a public garden on the land surrounding their Clinton, Iowa home.

As retirement age approached, the Bickelhaupts decided to enrich their lives by sharing the beauty of the plant world. This book recounts how they settled on the idea of an arboretum and brought that idea to fruition. Neither Fran or Bob had formal education in horticulture or botany, so early steps included attending short courses and lectures, and taking trips to other gardens around the world.

Educating the public about trees, shrubs, and flowers is a goal of the Bickelhaupt Arboretum and of this book, in which the Bickelhaupts describe the classes and tours held at the Arboretum, stressing the importance of good planning, record-keeping financial management, and equipment maintenance.

If you aspire to start a public garden or arboretum, or if you would like to see how one couple created a retirement filled with growth, creative problem-solving, and joy in sharing an appreciation of the natural world with others, this book is for you.

FRAN BICKELHAUPT (nee Kershner) and her husband, Bob, grew up two blocks apart in Clinton, Iowa. Bob worked his way through Northwestern University selling expensive used luxury cars in the Chicago area, and Fran enrolled at Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri and graduated from Northwestern. They were married on September 5, 1938, while Bob was still paying for the automobile dealership, which he had bought from his father.

The author and her husband have collaborated on several technical information papers published by the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta.
