Photo Contest
The Bickelhaupt Arboretum Photo Contest (BAPC)
is a contest for amateur photographers. The purpose
of the BAPC is to encourage use of the Bickelhaupt
Arboretum and promote quality photography.
CATEGORIES
1. Landscapes - These photos include (but are not limited to) landscapes, outdoor scenes, sunrises, and sunsets at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum. These images should showcase outdoor beauty. Note: If you enter a photo in this category, please include a description/title of your photo. (Ex. Arboretum's Pinetum at Sunset)
2. Artistic Close-Ups - These photos are close-ups of objects in the arboretum. If you take a simple close-up of a flower, it should have some creative value! (not just a flower) Be creative with the lighting, background, leaves, fencing, bugs, light rays, shadows etc. Note: If you enter a photo in this category, please note the approximate location in the arboretum that the photo was taken. Please include a title for your photo.
3. Open Category - These photos are ones that do not fit either of the above categories. Photos might include people or animals taken at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum. Note: If you enter a photo in this category, please note the approximate location in the arboretum that the photo was taken. Please include a title for your photo. Also: If your photo contains a recognizable person/people, you must obtain a signed "model release" form from the individual(s). (does not need to be sent to BAPC).

WINNING PHOTOGRAPHS
1. Winning photos will be encrypted and posted on a secure portion of the web site shortly after the end of the contest. Winning photos may be displayed at the arboretum, Clinton businesses, as well as local and state news publications.
2. First, second, and third place photos will be identified in each category. Runners up may be recognized.
3. All decisions of the judge are final.
4. We will attempt to contact winners by e-mail.
5. Contest entries are not separated by any other criteria. Therefore, the following characteristics DO NOT impact the final judging:
ALL ACCEPTABLE:
a. Digitally manipulated images
b. Black and white images
c. Humorous photos vs. "serious" photos
d. Photos taken with a digital camera
e. Photos taken with a film-based camera
and digitized

6. Photographers of winning entries may be contacted to supply a higher resolution version on disk to be used for printed display.
JUDGING
Our judge for this contest is Freelance Photographer Karen Austin. All entries in each category will be "blind" judged. No names will be attached to photos for the judge to know. If, in the opinion of the judge, insufficient numbers of qualified photos have been submitted, the number of places awarded in that category may be limited. Once photos have been judged, names of the photographers will be revealed and winners will be notified.
PRIZES
- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place photos will be identified in each category.
- 1st place winners in each category will receive a unique planting seen nowhere else in Clinton except the arborteum.
- Of the three 1st place photos, one will be designated "Best of Show."
- The "Best of Show" photographer will receive an additional larger unique plant seen nowhere else in Clinton except the arborteum.
CONTEST RULES
Entries must conform to the following rules:
1. Entries for this contest may be submitted as attachments to e-mail to the arboretum's photo entry e-mail address. The contest will also accept entries on disk (CD's only) via U.S. Mail. All mailed entries must be postmarked prior to the entry deadline. Submitted disks will not be returned by mail, although they can be picked up at the arboretum office during regular business hours at the conclusion of the contest.

2. For submitting entries by disk: the mailing address is 340 South 14th Street, Clinton, Iowa 52732. All mailed entries should be clearly labeled "PHOTO CONTEST ENTRY." Please refer to SPECIAL DIRECTIONS.

3. Each photographer may enter a total of three (3) entries per contest; one entry per category.

4. Bickelhaupt Arboretum employees are not eligible for this contest.

5. Bickelhaupt Arboretum is a family-friendly organization. We reserve the right to reject unsuitable or pornographic images. Unsuitable images for this family-friendly site include nude photos as well as photos of a sexually suggestive or overly violent content.

6. All entries should be submitted in digital jpeg format. Images taken with film-based cameras will be welcomed if they have been digitized via scanning.

7. Digital entries directly out of your camera at whatever size it is will be acceptable. PLEASE DO NOT CROP DOWN A PHOTO TO SUBMIT A SMALLER PORTION OF THE ORIGINAL. If you are unable to e-mail large files, you may want to resize the photo to no smaller than 8" x 10". If you are unfamiliar with resizing photos, you may want to visit "Tips On Resizing Photos". All successful entries will be displayed on the arboretum web site in a size measuring no small than approximately 5" x 7".

8. Entries should represent the seasonal conditions at the Bickelhaupt Arboretum - we welcome landscape photos, wildlife, and subjects found at the arboretum. Photos of the season of the contest will be accepted.

PUBLIC VIEWING & GRANTING OF LIMITED RIGHTS
Be aware that, if selected, your photo will be displayed to the public. Winning images will be included in the Bickelhaupt Arboretum web site. Winning photos may also be displayed to the public at the arboretum, local businesses, and in local and state media publications.
By submitting your photo, you are granting Bickelhaupt Arboretum permission to display your photograph to the public.
COPYRIGHT
Copyright of the image remains the property of the photographer. A photo credit with copyright symbol will be provided under winning/recognized images.
All images must be originals and must belong to the person submitting the photo; all rights in the photo must be the property of the person submitting the photo. The Bickelhaupt Arboretum, by virtue of this contest, will retain the right to display winning photos.
PRIVACY POLICY
Bickelhaupt Arboretum does not sell e-mail addresses or personal information. All information submitted to BAPC will not to be sold or used in any way that violates your right to privacy. E-mail addresses are required for the purpose of answering questions and notifying winners.
LEGAL
The laws of the State of Iowa, USA, govern this contest. Additionally, if local laws in your place of residence make this contest illegal, do not enter the contest.
