On February 2, 2008, Abbi Johnson of Hanover, IL (left), Michael Kinder of Savannah, IL. (middle) and Emily Hallnock of Clinton, IA (right) built a snowman for the birds at the arboretum. They also made a pinecone bird feeder to take home. To create facial features and buttons for the snowman, the children spread Crisco on various sized pinecones and rolled the pinecones in black sunflower seed . After the pinecones were in place, the kids headed to the Education Center for a cup of hot cocoa and learned about common birds that winter in our area. Linda Boardsen, arboretum volunteer, and founder of Riverview Birding Group taught the class.
