How to Plant Hostas

Planting Hostas

Light Requirements: Hostas prefer shade although some varieties will tolerate sun especially in cooler climates. Generally, the more sun in your planting site, the more compact the plant will be. In more shade, the plant will be larger with more luxuriant foliage.

Soil Composition: Hostas need reliably moist, humus-rich soil. Enrich your planting beds with organic matter.

Hostas will respond to being fertilized, regardless of the type. A nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 can be beneficial. Additionally, trace elements such as chelated iron, magnesium or calcium may be beneficial.

Gardening Zones: USDA Zones 3-9.

Blooming Season: Hostas bloom at various times depending on the cultivar and lighting conditions.

Placement: Hostas grow best in partially shaded areas, and can tolerate very shady areas. Except for a few varieties, they need protection from the heat of afternoon sun.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Hostas prefer loose well-drained soil, usually garden soil amended with compost or soil conditioners. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the current roots and future growth. Form a mound of soil in the center of the hole and spread the roots over the mound, adjust the height of the mound to provide the proper planting depth. Planting depth is 1/2 to 1 inch from the top of the roots or crown of the plant. Do not plant too deep. The roots should be covered with soil. The place on the stem where the individual leaves branch off should be above the ground. Fill to ground level with amended soil. Check to make sure roots remain covered after ground has settled. This is especially important shortly after planting and during the first winter after planting.

Hostas can be planted anytime during the growing season. Adequate watering will be required if planting in hotter weather or in sunnier locations. Although hostas can be divided anytime during the growing season, the best times are before the plant begins any substantial growth in the spring and 4-6 weeks before the end of the growing season.
